The History of Hairspray

4 February; Author: Matt O

hair care productsHair Spray like hairsprays are fine mists of a chemical mixture that is propelled from a pump container or an aerosol can. The chemicals cause the shafts of hair to adhere together. The chemicals or polymers were initially called resins because the first hairspray in the 1940s was created from a resin-like material that was like shellac. The chemicals keep the strands of hair together because they make layers of sticky film when it dries.

The hairspray can was made in 1943 when World War II was going on. During this time, aerosol sprays were used to kill bugs. After this war ended, the beauty industry saw the potential of the aerosol containers, which were pressurized by a fluorocarbon, or liquefied gas. In 1950, Helene Curtis was the first person to use the generic term “hairspray” for its newly created aerosol product named Spray Net. By the time 1955 came around, the company was selling the product all across the world.
